Sabaidee and welcome to Vientiane, Laos. Lao PDR is a charming country nestled in the middle of South East Asia, a land rich in Buddhist temples, colorful festivals, silk markets and natural wonders.

While you stay with us, here are a few local attractions just a short drive away from Angkham Hotel.

That Luang Stupa is the most sacred monument in the country and is the national symbol of Lao PDR. From the outside, That Luang Stupa looks more like a fortress surrounded by high walls, but inside it features two temples as well as the main stupa, which stands 148 feet tall. Locals say that That Luang was originally built early in the third century to house a breastbone of the Lord Buddha brought to Laos by an Indian missionary.

Patuxay Monument is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Vientiane. Also known as the Victory Monument, it was designed after the “Arc de Triomphe” in Paris, France. The monument was built between 1957 and 1968 using American funds and cement intended to build a new airport. There are staircases inside the monument pillars where you can climb 7 floors to the top, and see the panoramic views of Vientiane.

Wat Sisaket was built in 1818 by Chao Anouvong, the last king of the Lane Xang Kingdom. Wat Sisaket is most famous for being the only temple to survive after the Siamese-Lao War of 1823, as well as being the oldest Buddhist monastery in Laos. Inside the walls of the temple features thousands of tiny Buddha images and rows with hundreds of seated Buddha’s.

Wat Ho Phra Kaew is one of the most impressive temples in Vientiane. Originally built in 1565 as the personal temple of the then Lao royal family, it then became home for the Emerald Buddha after it was brought by Chao Setthathirat from Chiang Mai, then the capital of Lanna (ancient kingdom predating Laos). During the Siam-Lao war in 1778, the Siamese seized the sacred figurine and destroyed Ho Phra Kaew Chao Anouvong rebuilt the temple, only to have it razed again in the 19th century when Chao Anouvong led a rebellion against Siam rule. Wat Ho Phra Kaew was finally restored by the French during the colonization French Indochina between 1936 and 1942.

Buddha Park, also known as Xieng Khuan, is a famous sculpture park located along the Mekong River. A monk, who studied both Buddhism and Hinduism, built the park in 1958. The park contains more then 200 religious statues including a giant 40 metre high reclining Buddha image. The best place to take a photograph of the park is on top of the huge pumpkin structure, which is about 3 stories high.

COPE (Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise) is a non-profit organization, which provides clinical treatment and rehabilitation programmes for Lao people with disabilities. The COPE Visitor Centre features an exhibition regarding the problem of UXO in Lao PDR, through screening documentary films and displaying a variety of ‘Cluster Bombs’ as well as samples of prosthetic limbs made by the Centre over the years.

The Morning Market, known to locals as ‘Talat Sao’, is a great place to shop for local souvenirs such as handicrafts, ornaments or colorful silk ‘Sinhs’ (Traditional Lao Skirt). Here, most store’s open from as early as 7:00am on the dot.

The Night Market is the biggest and most popular tourist shopping spot in Vientiane. Set-up along the Mekong River, you will see a long stretch of red marquees with each individual store selling a wide variety of electronics, clothes, accessories, artwork, hill tribe silk and other traditional gifts.

Long Thanh Golf Course is an 18-hole, 72 par and 7,538 yard golf course, which meets international standards. Many golfers regard this golf course as the most beautiful golf course in Vientiane. Construction is underway to develop a further 18-holes, which will make Long Thanh Golf Course the first 36-hole golf course in Lao PDR.

Lao Country Golf Club is an 18-hole, 72 par and 6,005 yard golf course, which was one of the first golf course established in Lao PDR. The course underwent significant refurbishment recently and is now regarded as a resort, which meets the highest of standards.

SEA Games Golf Course is a 27-hole, 72 par (in any combination of 18-holes) and 10,739 yard (Course A: 3,600 / Course B: 3,528 / Course C: 3,611) golf course. The course was completed in 2009 to host the Golf Competition for the 2009 25th South East Asian Games right here in Vientiane.

KM6 Golf Club is a 9-hole, 72 par and 3,200 yard golf course. Most golfers congregate here for a regular round of golf due to its convenient and accessible location. The course is well suited and popular amongst senior golfers.
